When we frame the play through the lens of being "Sleepless," the stakes shift. We move away from a whimsical fairytale and toward something more psychological and intense. The direct catalyst for SLEEPLESS was unexpectedly modest: a scenario for a voice CD included with a dakimakura (body pillow) of Mamiya Marie, a character from Empress's earlier hit, STARLESS . After hearing the CD, Empress staff proposed turning it into a full game. Sei Shoujo, however, was dissatisfied with simply adapting the CD and insisted on building the story anew from the ground up.
